Charming Santa Barbara Estate Wedding full of Color

The eclectic beauty of this Santa Barbara soiree stuns, with pin-worthy details sprinkled throughout the day’s events. Set at Villa Verano, a Mission style estate, the ceremony and reception were both ridiculously ravishing. The only thing brighter than the vibrant decor was the bride’s smile – one look at the gallery shot by Mirelle Carmichael Photography, and it’s not too hard to see why.

From The Bride…Ammar and I met quite suddenly and randomly on a hot, New York City summer night. I was in New York City to cater a wedding and Ammar was passing through after being stationed overseas. We met at a mutual friend’s party and were instantly drawn to one another; since Ammar had to leave in few days we decided to meet the following day for brunch. Like all great romances, our courtship started with violent food poisoning: while on our first official date, strolling through Chelsea Market, I started uncontrollably vomiting. Ammar is a humanitarian aid worker, so he immediately knew I needed urgent care. Our first date turned into a 12 hour stint in the ER where he read me recipes from cooking magazines, spoke to the doctors on my behalf, and even changed my bedpan. I spent 5 days in the hospital and Ammar was there, the entire time, by my side.

After that, I knew he was the one. However our respective geographies poised a problem: I lived in California and Ammar lived literally wherever his job took him. After a month of long distance, Ammar joined me in California where we took a blissful 6 month vacation from life: we traveled up and down Highway 101, starting in Carmel and working our way down to San Diego and all the way back up to my hometown of Portland, Oregon. When it came time to choose a place for our wedding, we knew it had to be somewhere along the California coastline as an homage to our epic road trip.

After our sabbatical, I traveled to Pakistan to meet Ammar’s family where we got engaged. It was bittersweet: while we knew we were going to get married at some point, we didn’t exactly know when that would be. A few months after we were engaged, Ammar was finally assigned his next posting in…Abuja, Nigeria.

Let’s just say, we became very skilled at Skype. With my life on hold and my fiancé living in Africa, I had some free time on my hands to start planning our wedding. To keep myself awake long enough to talk to Ammar every night, I wound up spending countless hours reading wedding blogs and perusing Pinterest. I eventually moved to be with Ammar in Nigeria where my master planning continued. We live on a compound run by Ammar’s humanitarian organization; while the internet and power were a bit spotty and the idea of a Santa Barbara wedding seemed worlds away, planning our wedding became a daydream-esque hobby. Needless to say, I had every detail planned and ready by April 12th, 2014!

Because Ammar and I live so far away from our loved ones, we wanted an experience where everyone could be together at one place for an extended weekend celebration. I shied away from the traditional wedding venues as I wanted to dance the night away without having to worry about time limits. Enter Villa Verano. It’s a stunning private property located in the hills of Santa Barbara with built-in décor and old mission style ambiance. The space has multiple guest rooms, so our entire bridal party was able to stay on the premises.

It was important to me that every detail of our wedding was homemade and touched by a loved one. From the throw pillows my mother sewed, to the chalkboard my father built in our garage, to the wedding menus my sister designed, to the jam and pickle favors I made with my grandmother, everything had a story behind it. I wanted my wedding to have an organic, small, homemade, intimate feel—similar in essence to the dinner parties I love to throw for friends and family. I choose my vendors with this sentiment in mind as well.

All the hard work and attention to detail paid off. It was a truly magical night. I remember walk around stunned thinking to myself, it’s exactly how I thought it would look.

Destination Glam Haiku Mill Wedding

There’s no denying this Haiku Mill wedding is something special. And while it’s got the kind of glamorous styling to make any wedding lover’s jaw drop, it also has a story that speaks to a family’s love and strength admits loss. Read on for the bride’s beautiful words, and don’t miss the stunning film by Love & You Video, along with the complete gallery from Bryce Covey Photography.

From The Bride… Taylor and I met when we were young kids growing up in a small town of Washington. We were high school sweethearts who separated soon after leaving home for college and remained strangers for years thereafter. It wasn’t until a chance encounter that we reentered one another’s lives and embarked on the incredible journey of becoming husband and wife thirteen years later!

A few months prior to our engagement my father tragically passed away. Our wedding was scheduled on the one year anniversary of his passing and we wanted the week to be as much a celebration, as a symbolic rising from the brokenness we experienced just one year prior. We live thousands of miles away from most of our family and friends and desired a destination wedding which afforded our guests a vacation and us an extended period of time to celebrate with the people we love most. Taylor’s grandfather lives in Hawaii and we both spent a considerable amount of time vacationing there through the years. Selecting Maui was an easy decision.

We wanted the event to embody family, friendship and connectedness, culminating in a grand celebration. The week of our wedding would be spent with guests at a beautiful resort, but we wanted our wedding day to be something truly magical. With a background in interior design and architecture, and a deep passion for historic structures, it has been my dream to be married inside a ruin. The moment we stepped onto the Haiku Mill grounds I knew our search was over. It is one of the most special places I have ever experienced. The structure is overgrown with foliage and the owner has seamlessly integrated ancient artifacts she sourced in Europe throughout the grounds. Stepping inside the ruin brought me to tears and our decision was made.We would rent large tour buses and shuttle our guests from a beachside resort into the Maui countryside for our fairytale wedding.

The theme of our wedding was Hawaiian Versailles Garden Party, which was heavily influenced by the nature of our space and the bounty of parisian artifacts sprinkled throughout. We wanted sophisticated elegance with a casual attitude. Guests were encouraged to wear neutral attire and the wedding party followed suite. The groom wore a grey suit with tie and the groomsmen, bridesmen (I had two) and ushers all wore variations of a grey suit ensemble with white collar shirts and rolled sleeves. The bridesmaids wore full length nude sequin gowns, which had an incredible vintage deco feel. I chose to wear a form fitting lace mermaid dress and a long cathedral veil.

As the owner of an interior design firm, 30 Collins, I took great pleasure in bringing our vision to life. I designed and handcrafted every detail of our day down to the website, invitation suite, maps, programs and cards to inform guests of our special day. I used a handwritten cursive script for all text on heavy white watercolor paper and drew a whimsical map to include in the package. The collateral was a wonderful window into what guests could expect for our big day.

Although our wedding was not held on the beach, the ocean has significant meaning to Taylor and myself. Just prior to the ceremony we made the short drive to a remote outcropping and spent our last few moments together alone with the ocean before becoming husband and wife. Our photographer, Bryce Covey and Videographer, Love & You Video, followed us down to capture the very intimate moment. The experience and resulting photos still take my breathe away.

Our wedding day was one of the most magical of my life and an experience I will forever cherish. Taylor and I were incredibly blessed to be surrounded by so many family and friends who traveled so far in support of our love and celebration of the next chapter in our lives together. Of the innumerable magical moments which occurred that day, one of the most memorable was in the form of a giant rainbow which greeted us upon being pronounced husband and wife. I knew it was a special gift from my father to signal his joyful blessing and it will remain one of the most treasured memories of that once in a lifetime day.

From Love & You Video…We feel so lucky to have filmed Nicole & Taylor’s wedding. They chose to have a destination wedding in Maui, at Haiku Mill, one of the most unique and sought-after wedding venues in Hawaii. Once a real Sugar mill, now breathtakingly beautiful event venue. It’s like stepping back in the time and getting surrounded by elegance and beauty.

Video was very important to the couple, specially since brides grandmother was not able to be a part of their special day, we felt a big responsibility to capture every important moment as perfectly as their wedding was so the grandmother can feel like she was a part of it too.

Everyone can see how good looking the couple are, supermodel gorgeous! Not only that, just watch the video to see how strong the love is between them and how happy they are to be marrying each other.

Vintage Glamour at the Boca Raton Resort & Club

Gold is our mascot, so to speak, and mixed with the pink facade of the Boca Raton Resort & Club , it’s nothing short of stunning. Captured by Kat Braman Photography, this winter glam affair with a six foot moss monogram, a reception sparkling with candlelight and a sea of white florals by Boca By Design and Desiree Dawn Events. Check out the gallery for even more and the film by Shaina Koren below.

From Kat Braman PhotographyMorgan and Stephen have known each other since they were 15 and have dated since they were 19. Because they grew up loving each other, they and their families have looked forward to this day for many years.

We drew our wedding inspiration from all different sources of mixed metals. From home interiors, place settings, industrial layouts, gilded objects, to gold dipped leaves. We knew from the beginning we wanted an elegant, sophisticated, and timeless wedding. Our dear friend and wedding planner extraordinaire, Desiree Oftedel of Desiree Dawn Events, influenced our special day with unique ways to personalize each detail and to bring vintage pieces in to our modern palette. She sourced all different sized and shaped mirrors and we used them throughout our decor to bring in a modern reflective element. We wanted to incorporate the beautiful Florida nature that the Boca Raton Resort had to offer so we chose design elements that used greenery and foliage to honor that. We used a stunning 6-foot moss-covered “H” for our escort card display with guests names written on to unique shaped mirrors that could also double as tree ornaments (Stephen proposed using a Christmas tree ornament!). We used large palm frawns to flank the bars so our out-of-town guests made sure to enjoy our favorite local foliage. We had signature cocktails, reflective of the bride and groom’s tastes, a cuba libre for him and a champagne cocktail for her. Desiree even had a few tricks up her sleeve, including a surprise jacket change for the handsome groom to compliment his new bride’s second dress and to get the party started. And since we have a house divided, our personal place cards were accompanied by a tiny silver Seminole and Gator and the descriptives, “His Gator” and “Her Nole”.

We planned our wedding with our sweet friend and incredible design leading light, Desiree of Desiree Dawn Events. She made the whole process a dream, bringing in the most talented team of vendors and putting our minds at ease. The best part of our day was knowing that we had nothing to worry about except enjoying and savoring every single moment.
